University of Newcastle - New South Wales

The University of Newcastle is one of Australia's strongest research-oriented public universities. Established in 1965 as an independent university, it began in 1951 as a college affiliated with the University of New South Wales. Today, with over 36,000 students (2023), including over 18,000 undergraduates and a large postgraduate community, UON offers a multicultural learning environment with students from more than 114 countries.

Ranked in the top 200 worldwide in the 2025 QS World University Rankings and in the 201-250 band in the Times Higher Education 2025 list, the university is a pioneer on a global scale, especially in sustainability. According to THE Impact Rankings 2024 data; within the scope of the Sustainable Development Goals (SDGs), it ranked 2nd in Australia in the category of "Climate Action" and in the top 10 worldwide in the field of "Health and Well-being".

The University conducts its educational activities under the umbrella of three main academic colleges: Engineering, Health, and Human and Social Sciences. These colleges offer comprehensive undergraduate and postgraduate programs in architecture, engineering, computer science, business, law, psychology, nursing and health sciences. The University's research quality has been recognized as one of the top eight universities in Australia by Excellence in Research for Australia (ERA).

Its main campus, Callaghan, is located in a natural woodland area, about 10 km from Newcastle city center. It is equipped with modern classrooms, laboratories, student residences, recreational areas and research centers. It also offers both regional and urban learning environments with additional campuses in Ourimbah, Newcastle City and Newcastle CBD. The University also has academic centers in Singapore and Sydney.

The University of Newcastle has a wide range of facilities that diversify the student experience. With over 150 clubs and societies, the Wollotuka Institute, a strong local student support center, campus media, arts events and social programs, there is a rich university life. In addition, diploma and pathway programs through the Open Foundation, Yapug and UNCIE offer significant opportunities to ease the transition to higher education, especially for international students.

As one of the pioneers in the field of medical education, UON is one of the first schools to implement the Problem-Based Learning (PBL) method, and is also home to regional and globally influential research centers such as the Hunter Medical Research Institute.
