What belongs on a boarding-school shortlist?

Academics are only one part of the decision when school and home become the same place.

A boarding-school shortlist should consider curriculum and academic support alongside pastoral care, boarding-house life, weekend routines and the student’s independence.

Ask how the school communicates with parents, what support is available outside lessons and how safeguarding responsibilities are structured. Current answers should come from the school, not from assumptions based on reputation.

The most suitable school is the one where the student can realistically live and learn well, not automatically the one with the best-known name.
