Attending a summer school in the UK means gaining independence, discovering a new culture and making lifelong friendships. Yet one of the most stressful parts of this exciting journey is packing. Questions such as “Will it be too cold?”, “Are the plugs different?” and “How much should I bring?” can worry both students and parents.
Happy Education is here to help you through this process as smoothly as possible. That's why we've prepared our comprehensive England summer school luggage guide, covering everything from the changing weather in England to technical details.
The Golden Rule: Keep Essential Documents Together
Your most important item is not your clothes but your documents. You can buy clothes from anywhere, but a missing document can cause big problems at the airport or during the school registration stage. We recommend that you take photocopies of all your documents along with their originals and store them digitally (cloud storage or email).
Documents you need to keep at the most accessible place in your suitcase:
- Passport and Visa: Passport and visa with a validity of at least as long as your travel duration.
- School Admission Letter (Acceptance Letter / Visa Letter): When the passport officer asks you why you are here, the most basic document you should show is this.
- Accommodation information: the open address and contact numbers of your hostel or family accommodation.
- Travel Health Insurance: Healthcare in the UK can be expensive, so having your insurance policy with you is crucial.
- Consent form (for 18 years and under): Notar-approved English permission certificate from parents.
- Airport Transfer Information: Who will meet you and the Happy Education group leader's number in case of an emergency.
Prepare for British Weather: Dress in Layers
The phrase "one day four seasons" used for the famous weather in England is certainly not an exaggeration. You may wake up in the morning to sunshine and warmth, but you may encounter heavy rain at lunchtime, and you may feel cold with a gentle breeze in the evening. That's why the most sensible way to prepare for England summer school is the "layered clothing" (layering) strategy.
What should you wear on your ears?
- Waterproof lightweight jacket or raincoat: umbrellas can be blown away by the wind, but a quality raincoat will always protect you. This piece is a must-have for the suitcase.
- Sweatshirt and thin jackets: 2-3 pieces of medium thickness that can be easily worn and removed over shirts.
- T-shirts: Cotton and breathable fabrics, selected for their abundance of short-sleeved T-shirts.
- Trousers and Shorts: Comfortable joggers, leggings and shorts for hot days.
- A stylish outfit: an additional, more stylish outfit for the school-organised "Farewell Party" or disco nights.
Shoe Selection: Comfort for City Tours and Sports Activities
Going to school in England means walking a lot. You'll walk an average of 15,000 steps a day on the streets of London, Oxford, or Cambridge. Choosing the wrong shoes can cause you to spend the entire trip with foot pain.
Footwear Suggestions:
- Walking Shoes (Sneakers): Shoes that you wear before, to get your feet used to, and that are comfortable for a sport.
- Spare sports shoes: always have a spare pair in case of rain.
- Slippers: Lightweight slippers for use in the bedroom or at home.
- Football, basketball or tennis shoes are suitable for the activities of the school campus.
Technology and Electronics: UK Plug Type and Adaptors
In England the electricity system is different from Turkey. The two-pronged round plug (Type C/F) used in Turkey does not fit the three-pronged square plug (Type G) used in England.
- UK Type G Adapter: Make sure to buy a UK Type G adapter before leaving Turkey. They are much more expensive at airports.
- Powerbank (Portable Charger): During all day outdoors trips, your phone's battery running out can leave you in a difficult situation. A powerbank with at least 10,000 mAh capacity is life-saving.
- Extension Cable (Group Plug): In guest rooms, plugs can sometimes be far from the bed or there can be a small number of them. You can charge all your devices simultaneously with a small group of plugs.
Health and Hygiene: Your Personal Care Kit
In the UK, you can access many medications from pharmacies, but it's always safer to bring along your usual brands.
- Personal Health Kit: Regular medications (with a prescription), painkiller, fever reducer, bandage, and throat lozenge.
- Hygiene Products: You can take shampoo, shower gel and toothpaste in travel-sized containers to save space in your suitcase. When you run out, you can buy a new one from local shops such as Boots and Superdrug.
- Sunscreen: Even though England is cloudy in the summer, don't forget that the summer sun can be very hot.
Spending Money and Finances: Cash or Card?
In 2026, just like in the rest of the world, card payments will be accepted everywhere in the UK. Some buses and cafes even don't accept cash.
- Bank Cards and Credit Cards: Cards with contactless and international usage capabilities are the most convenient option. Prepaid travel cards (Revolut, Wise, or similar student-friendly cards) provide great convenience for students.
- Cash Sterling (GBP): It is necessary to have small banknotes of 100-200 Sterling in your possession for emergencies.
School and Study Supplies
On the first day of school you will take a level identification test and start your classes. Being prepared will boost your confidence.
- A small backpack: a backpack you can put your water, umbrella and wallet in when you go on a trip.
- Stationery: One notepad and a few ballpoint pens. Instead of heavy dictionaries, prefer to download offline dictionary apps to your phone.
Five Essential Packing Tips
- Check your baggage limit: Typically, airlines give 20-23 kg of baggage allowance. Don't overfill your suitcase with gifts you'll be taking back.
- Use a luggage label: put a clear label on your luggage with your name and phone number (including the country code).
- Vacuum Packing: You can save up to 50% of space in your suitcase by putting your clothes in vacuum bags.
- In your hand luggage: put a set of underwear and a t-shirt in your hand luggage to avoid your luggage being delayed.
- Local Flavours: A small package of Turkish biscuits or chocolate will satisfy your longing and make for a great "icebreaker" with your foreign friends.
